BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed image format native to Windows. Every pixel is stored directly with no compression — a 1920×1080 BMP at 24-bit color is always 5.93MB regardless of content. JPG applies lossy compression, so the same photo becomes 300–600KB at quality 85 with no visible difference.
At quality 85, the difference is imperceptible for photographs and most graphics. JPG compression discards some pixel data, but at 85 this is invisible in normal viewing. If you need pixel-perfect output (for text, line art, or logos), convert to PNG instead — it is lossless.
A typical BMP photo becomes 5–20x smaller as a JPG. A 6MB BMP photograph typically produces a 300–600KB JPG at quality 85. Screenshots and diagrams with large flat-color areas may compress even more. ConvertYard shows you the exact byte savings per file in the results.
